Congratulations to Adele Ferguson & Gary Hughes from ‘The Australian’ who were announced joint winners of the ACSI Media Award for 2009 during an award lunch held in Melbourne on 1 October.

The investigative series entitled “Underbelly Inc.” exposed weaknesses in Australia’s corporate governance regime that were used by underworld crime figures, to manipulate the stock market and seize control of legitimate businesses, stripping them of assets.

Guest speaker - Gary Banks, Chairman, Productivity Commission

Gary's address was one of the Commissions first presentations relating to the draft report on Executive Remuneration. This public inquiry was requested to look into the regulatory framework surrounding remuneration of directors and executives of companies regulated under the Corporations Act and the draft report is due for release at the end of September.

What is the ACSI Media Award? 

The ACSI Media Award was established in 2007 to encourage a broader and more effective coverage on corporate governance related issues within the Australia media and to acknowledge excellence in Australian journalism.

The winner of this award is announced and presented during a lunch attended by members of the media and superannuation industries.

What is corporate governance?

Corporate governance is the framework of rules, relationships, systems and processes within and by which authority is exercised and controlled in corporations.

It encompasses the mechanisms by which companies and those in control are held to account. Corporate governance influences how the objectives of the company are set and achieved, how risk is monitored and assessed and how performance is optimised.

Nominee eligibility

Submissions for this award are open to journalists (including freelance) working within the Australian print, broadcasting, radio and online mediums and for work produced between the 8 August 2008 and 13 August 2009. The winning submission will have contributed to an increased understanding of corporate governance by the public, institutional investors and business community and have explained or examined the related legal frameworks and/or business trends. 

Submission criteria 

All nominees must:

  • only submit their original work
  • the maximum number of nomination entries permitted per indidividual is 2
  • if the entry consists of multiple pieces/a series - it must not exceeed a maximum of 5 pieces
  • complete the ACSI Media Award 2009 Nomination Form
  • provide a brief summary of no more than 300 words on how their entry has satisfied the objective and selection criteria
  • provide 5 copies of each entry
  • if the entry is a joint submission, an explanation of each of the parties level of involvement must be clarified
  • if a print submission, the entry must be provided in the following two formats 1) a colour original or photocopy of the newspaper page the article appeared within and 2) a plain text version in 12 point font and 1.5 line spacing.

The prize

The award winner will either join 600 worldwide corporate governance experts at the 2010 International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) Conference being held in Toronto, Canada or receive a cash prize equivalent to the value of $5,000.

The winner is also invited to join the ACSI Media Award Judging Panel for 2009.

The judging panel

The winning submission is selected by a panel of independent superannuation and media peers.  The 2009 judges are:
